The San Francisco 49ers are signing free-agent safety Obi Melifonwu, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and the player's agent.

The then-Oakland Raiders made Melifonwu a second-round draft pick out of Connecticut in 2017. He appeared in seven games during his first two NFL seasons but has not played since 2018 while with the New England Patriots. He was part of the Patriots' Super Bowl LIII team that beat the Los Angeles Rams. The safety spent the 2019 season on New England's practice squad.

Melifonwu recorded 10 tackles during those first two NFL seasons.
