49ers signing safety Obi Melifonwu, per Schefter

Jan 4, 2021 at 11:09 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers are signing free-agent safety Obi Melifonwu, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter and the player's agent.

The then-Oakland Raiders made Melifonwu a second-round draft pick out of Connecticut in 2017. He appeared in seven games during his first two NFL seasons but has not played since 2018 while with the New England Patriots. He was part of the Patriots' Super Bowl LIII team that beat the Los Angeles Rams. The safety spent the 2019 season on New England's practice squad.

Melifonwu recorded 10 tackles during those first two NFL seasons.

The Sports Business Journal is reporting that the NFL is getting close to finalizing its new media deals for the rights to broadcast or stream future games. Things could cross the finish line as early as this week and then be announced next week—possibly earlier. It sounds like Fox will retain the rights to NFC games on Sundays, but there has reportedly been some pushback from the network on the asking price—over $2.2 billion per year for 11 years—which doubles that of the previous deal. As reported earlier, Amazon Prime Video looks poised to secure the exclusive rights to simulcast Thursday Night Football on its streaming platform,

Orlovsky believes 49ers become Super Bowl contenders with Carson Wentz

There is no indication that the San Francisco 49ers are serious about Carson Wentz. There was a report that the team inquired about the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, but that may have just been general manager John Lynch and company doing their due diligence. It's always worth knowing the going rate for a former starting NFL quarterback, after all. Wentz isn't a fan-favorite trade candidate either. He was one of the worst quarterbacks in the league last season. His 65.0 overall Pro Football Focus grade was a career-low. One ESPN analyst feels Wentz paired with the 49ers could be a game-changer, though. Former quarterback Dan Orlovsky recently said that the Eagles passer with the Indianapolis Colts or San Francisco would make either team a Super Bowl

ESPN's NFL experts answered some offseason-related questions, including identifying some "sneaky-good" free agents and predicting a destination for disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Two San Francisco 49ers impending free agents were labeled as "sneaky-good" players that NFL teams should covet once the bidding wars kick off next month. That is assuming neither is re-signed before then. Matt Bowen named defensive end Kerry Hyder, who racked up a career-high sack total last season, his first with San Francisco. "Hyder has traits as an edge rusher off
