49ers sign LS Colin Holba, activate TE Charlie Woerner from COVID list

Dec 29, 2020 at 1:00 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of long snapper Colin Holba, who previously spent two seasons (2018–19) with the team, to a one-year deal. The move comes a day after the 49ers placed long snapper Taybor Pepper on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

San Francisco also activated tight end Charlie Woerner from the reserve/COVID-19 list, where he had been since December 19.

The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.

Holba (6-4, 248) was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round (213th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. Throughout his three-year career with the Jaguars (2017), 49ers (2018-19), and New York Giants (2019), he has appeared in 18 career games. Holba was signed to the Los Angeles Rams practice squad on December 9, 2020.

A 26-year-old native of Louisville, KY, Holba attended the University of Louisville. In four years with the Cardinals (2013-16), he appeared in 26 games and served as the primary long snapper during his junior and senior seasons, registering three special teams tackles.

By David Bonilla

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers are among quarterback Deshaun Watson's list of teams that he is "intrigued by." "I checked in with a source that says Deshaun Watson has a list of teams that he's intrigued by," said Fowler on ESPN's Get Up. "He's not pigeonholing anything, but he's got a list. I didn't get all the teams, but I was told that the Denver Broncos, the San Francisco 49ers are two of them. "I also asked the source about the Jets and the Dolphins because they have the most draft capital this year and the next few years. I was told the Jets, 'Eh, probably not.' Maybe more so the Dolphins as far as viability." Watson has expressed frustration with the Texans organization and has requested a trade. The

Alex Smith reflects on his 49ers days with Colin Kaepernick, addresses his NFL future

By Kirk Larrabee

It's been the better part of a decade since Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick were part of the same quarterback room with the San Francisco 49ers, but Smith still sounds as impressed as ever with what he experienced on and off the field when the two of them were teammates. Smith spoke for almost an hour this week on Kaepernick and a number of other subjects during a guest spot on the 10 Questions With Kyle Brandt Podcast (click here to listen). Smith, who was the starting quarterback for the 49ers when Kaepernick was selected in Round 2 of the 2011 NFL Draft, told Brandt he remembered Kaepernick as a "great dude" who brought an impressive work ethic to the NFL right out of the gate. "We were doing workouts

Looking at the Road Ahead: Why the 49ers' quest for a sixth Super Bowl win still looks promising

By Don Atkinson
Feb 16, 2021

When the 49ers' injury-driven 2020 season mercifully ended, the team took unwanted claim to the basement of the NFC West at 6-10 and began fielding a litany of questions about its roster future. A few of those questions have been resolved, but many more are still left open, and have become the topic of debate among both football analysts and the team's fan base. The greatest questions, of course, have revolved around whether the 49ers can ride out another year with oft-injured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who spent much of last season either hobbled on the field or watching from the press box. The fervor over whether Garoppolo can raise his play to a level needed to win a Super Bowl has continued to escalate, making his future with the team, at least to observers, seem shaky
