On Monday, it sounded like San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was at least contemplating the possibility of a quarterback change heading into the team's Week 15 contest against the Dallas Cowboys. Shanahan informed reporters before Wednesday's practice that Nick Mullens will continue to lead the offense.
"I thought about it for two days," Shanahan said. "Nick's going to get the start this week unless something goes crazy in practice. But they're both ready to play, and [C.J. Beathard] gets plenty of reps. They're in a situation, like I kind of said all year, I see both of them as backups for us right now, and they're trying to prove that they're capable of being starters, and they haven't proved that fully. They could be more consistent with that."
Mullens has appeared in nine games with seven starts this season in relief of injured quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. He has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 2,218 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Mullens has thrown at least one pick in six of his seven starts this season, including his last six starts.
The 49ers have three regular-season games remaining. After Dallas, San Francisco will be the road team against the Arizona Cardinals and then will host the Seattle Seahawks.
