Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has found himself among the San Francisco 49ers' inactive players for the last three games. It wasn't because of any injury either. He was last active on November 1, when all of his snaps came on special teams. That's not a good vote of confidence in the former defensive starter and impending free agent.

Witherspoon's game status could be different on Monday night against the Buffalo Bills.

"Ahkello definitely has a chance to get up this week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I expect him to. I mean, a lot of that has been special-teams decisions. We lost two guys, our starting nickel. Then we lost Ken Webster, who was a special-teams player, and he was getting up over Ahkello because of special teams.

"But now, we're down two guys, which moves Ahkello up. And I expect Ahkello to come in and play at a high level if we need him on defense, and I think he'll come out, and he'll be a better special-teams player for us this week too."

The fact that it takes so many injuries for the fourth-year cornerback even to have a chance to suit up could be a sign of how the team views Witherspoon.

"I really like Ahkello," Shanahan added. "I think Ahkello's a really good dude. I enjoy talking to him. We talked a lot over these years together. He knows what I like about his game. He knows what I dislike about his game."

Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

PFF mock draft has 49ers adding cornerback with 'unique fluidity and size'

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

Analyst Steve Palazzolo unveiled a first-round mock draft for Pro Football Focus, attempting to forecast the selections for each NFL team within the top 32 picks. While the San Francisco 49ers concentrated on strengthening the defensive line in free agency, Palazzolo envisions the team continuing to fortify that side of the ball. In his mock draft, Palazzolo predicts that the 49ers will select former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "Tampa's unique fluidity and size for a cornerback make him worthy of a top-75 pick," reads the analysis from Pro Football Focus' big board. "If he can clean up his footwork, he can

Schrager mock draft has 49ers adding 'universally liked and respected' receiver

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

With only nine days remaining until the start of the 2024 NFL Draft, Good Morning Football's Peter Schrager revealed his first mock draft of the year. While most might expect the San Francisco 49ers to target an offensive lineman, Schrager has the team bolstering its wide receiver corps with an SEC talent. Schrager has the 49ers using the No. 31 overall pick to select former Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey, whose 2023 campaign with the Bulldogs was limited by back and ankle injuries. "McConkey in the first round? Yes," Schrager wrote. "Above guys like Troy Franklin and Keon Coleman? Perhaps. I've spoken to a
