49ers-Bills: Ahkello Witherspoon has a chance to be active, says Kyle Shanahan

Dec 4, 2020 at 8:43 AM--

Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has found himself among the San Francisco 49ers' inactive players for the last three games. It wasn't because of any injury either. He was last active on November 1, when all of his snaps came on special teams. That's not a good vote of confidence in the former defensive starter and impending free agent.

Witherspoon's game status could be different on Monday night against the Buffalo Bills.

"Ahkello definitely has a chance to get up this week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "I expect him to. I mean, a lot of that has been special-teams decisions. We lost two guys, our starting nickel. Then we lost Ken Webster, who was a special-teams player, and he was getting up over Ahkello because of special teams.

"But now, we're down two guys, which moves Ahkello up. And I expect Ahkello to come in and play at a high level if we need him on defense, and I think he'll come out, and he'll be a better special-teams player for us this week too."

The fact that it takes so many injuries for the fourth-year cornerback even to have a chance to suit up could be a sign of how the team views Witherspoon.

"I really like Ahkello," Shanahan added. "I think Ahkello's a really good dude. I enjoy talking to him. We talked a lot over these years together. He knows what I like about his game. He knows what I dislike about his game."

The saga between the Houston Texans and their disgruntled quarterback continues. According to one NFL insider, Deshaun Watson has no plans to make amends with his current team, and the relationship between player and team may not be repairable anytime soon. "Let's go back to last Sunday," ESPN's Adam Schefter said on Saturday during ESPN's NFL Countdown (via Garrett Stepien of 247Sports, h/t to Patrick Tulini). "I tweeted out that one person close to Watson said that if his anger level after they traded DeAndre Hopkins last offseason was a two, this

The San Francisco 49ers spent the last month of the 2020 season in Glendale, Arizona. The team was displaced from its home due to Santa Clara County COVID-19 restrictions banning contact sports. Kyle Shanahan and company tried to make it business as usual, even though the situation was about as unusual as it could get. Even stranger was the fact that, at the time of the move, Maricopa County in Arizona was worse off when it came to COVID-19 than Santa Clara County. So, for the 49ers, their month-long home wasn't going to be any safer. On Monday, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch sat down and spoke at length with reporters — via Zoom, of course. It had been less than 24 hours since the team arrived back in the Bay Area after completing the 2020 season

Wright: Deshaun Watson with Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers should 'terrify' the NFL

By David Bonilla
Jan 8, 2021

The San Francisco 49ers fanbase is decidedly split on the prospect of mortgaging an insurmountable amount of draft capital for the prospect of adding Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Pro Football Focus laid out a hypothetical but realistic trade scenario for the quarterback that involved San Francisco shipping off its first-round picks in each of the next three drafts, this year's second-round pick, and Jimmy Garoppolo. As of this post, the results of our poll on the subject are nearly evenly split, with half willing to do that and the other half unwilling to give up that
