Kyle Shanahan has yet to wear his official red Shanahat this season. If he hasn't by now, he probably isn't going to. The San Francisco 49ers coach has come close, though. He switched to a red version of the team's script hat during the team's Week 9 contest against the Green Bay Packers, but it wasn't the Shanahat.
The 49ers sit at 4-5, which places them in last place within the NFC West. So Shanahan's choices of headwear haven't been as lucky as last season, and the coach is running out of options.
"I wore a red hat last week," Shanahan jokingly explained on Thursday during KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "That didn't help too much. I'm running out of colors. I've got white left, and New Era, because of COVID, they weren't able to make new hats this year because their place was shut down, or wherever they make it. So, that's why I haven't been able to get any new hats.
"But I don't have a white one. So, hopefully, one day, I'll get a white one because it will be my last color available."
Shanahan was told he could wear his hat backward if he is looking for ways to mix things up on the sidelines.
"Trust me, I would love to do that," Shanahan responded after laughing. "That's what I do off the sidelines. But I'm afraid I'll take too much crap for it."

To go with yesterday's evaluation of the offense, I am evaluating the roster on the defensive side of the ball today. As an overall metric, points allowed per game (ppg) is the one that matters most. Two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers allowed 17.5 ppg, 3rd in the league....
