49ers' DeMeco Ryans discusses the challenges of facing NFC West quarterbacks

By David Bonilla
Jun 3, 2021

Wednesday represented the first time DeMeco Ryans sat down and spoke with reporters since being named the defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers in January. He has the difficult task of replacing Robert Saleh, who is now the New York Jets head coach. An even bigger challenge might be stopping the quarterbacks within the NFC West. Not only does he have to find a way to slow down Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray twice a year, now he has to worry about Matthew Stafford being in the division. Ryans was asked about that challenge on Wednesday, and the coach shared his thoughts on each opposing quarterback. Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks "I think when you look at the quarterbacks in our division, first

Schein ranks 49ers as top worst-to-first candidate but questions quarterbacks

Adam Schein of NFL Network recently ranked the NFL's top worst-to-first candidates. The columnist went division-by-division and examined last season's last-place finishers, ordering each of the eight squads based on their chances to win their respective divisions in 2021. The team with the best chance, in Schein's mind, is the San Francisco 49ers. With a relatively clean bill of health this season, he feels the Niners should be much improved. After all, it wasn't that long ago that head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad played in the Super Bowl. "The return of Nick Bosa, in particular, changes everything for the defense," Schein noted.

Frank Gore remains a beloved player among the San Francisco 49ers fanbase, despite the running back not having played for the team since 2014. He spent last season with the New York Jets. Before that, he spent one season each with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins. Sandwiched between those stints and his 10 seasons with the Niners were three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. As first reported by Jake Hutchinson (h/t to Patrick Tulini for the find), Gore said on KNBR that he still seeks to continue his illustrious career and is waiting until training camp to see if the right situation presents itself. If that doesn't happen, it may mean it's time for Gore's illustrious career to come to an end. The running back

Simms ranks 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo at No. 21 among top 40 QBs

By David Bonilla

Chris Simms of NBC Sports continues the countdown of his often controversial annual ranking of his top 40 NFL quarterbacks. The San Francisco 49ers were previously represented by rookie Trey Lance, who came in at No. 38. Now we know where starter Jimmy Garoppolo falls within the ranking as teams prepare for the 2021 season. Simms revealed Nos. 21-25 this week, and Garoppolo sits at No. 21. That is one spot higher than Ben Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Availability is an issue," Simms notes while discussing Garoppolo's placement during his podcast. "Let's just start right there. ... It's the first thing you have to think about. It's why the 49ers drafted a
