Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that San Francisco 49ers cornerback K'Waun Williams is eyeing a Week 8 return against the Seattle Seahawks from his ACL sprain. Could Richard Sherman return around the same time and give the defensive backfield a boost?
It sounds like Sherman is getting closer to returning. Head coach Kyle Shanahan remains hopeful that his veteran cornerback can get back on the practice field soon after sitting on injured reserve with a calf injury since September 16. Sherman recently received injections to help reduce the inflammation and speed up his recovery after a small setback.
"I'm doing a lot better," Sherman said this week on the
Cris Collinsworth Podcast, which he co-hosts. "It's coming along. It's starting to come together. We're going to work our way and try to get back on this field as soon as possible."
Meanwhile,
Jason Verrett has been filling in nicely during Sherman's absence. Opposing quarterbacks own a passer rating of 7.0 when targeting him.
No, I didn't leave off any numbers.
Verrett has been targeted 11 times this season, given up four receptions, and hauled in an interception on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams.
"You're just so excited and so happy to see that because of everything he's been through," Sherman said. "I mean, some of the most devastating injuries after injury after injury, and then setback after setback. And you just want the best for him, and he's out there showing the world that he's an elite corner. He's probably going to end up with one of the lowest pass ratings (against him) in NFL history if he keeps playing the way he is."

Did the 49ers get better in the first week of free agency?
It's been less than one week since the free agency rumors started swirling. The San Francisco 49ers have been busy, from restructuring contracts to seeing some of their own sign elsewhere to bringing aboard new players. They even pulled off a trade. But have they improved their roster this first week of NFL free agency?
Let's take a look at which additions and returning players help, and which losses hurt.
Additions that help
The addition that helped the most is likely edge rusher Leonard Floyd. The veteran pass rusher played in all 17 games last season and hasn't missed a game since 2017. The 49ers have been searching for that edge rusher opposite of Nick Bosa since Dee Ford. Floyd very well could be that guy, finishing with at least nine sacks
Three Key Defensive Free Agents to Make the 49ers Better in 2024
Although the defense finished as one of the top defenses in 2023 under Steve Wilks, the San Francisco 49ers struggled in a few areas, like stopping the run, finishing the pass rush with sacks, and surrendering explosive plays. In this editorial, we will look to find three defensive players to keep the 49ers defense among the elite.
The 49ers have 22 players scheduled to become free agents, 12 being defensive players. The team must address the edge, interior, and cornerback positions. Improving these three areas will keep the 49ers on top.
Three defensive ends—Chase Young, Randy Gregory, and Clelin Ferrell—are set to become free agents. Per Pro Football Focus (PFF), the trio totaled 74 pressures (11 sacks, 17 hits, and 46 hurries). If the 49ers want to
49ers mailbag: What are the latest free agency moves? Could Arik Armstead still return to SF? Who will be the second starting DT?
As we move into the new NFL year, the San Francisco 49ers have been making moves. There have been new additions to the team, and there have been departures. You can keep up with the latest 49ers roster changes here at 49ers Webzone.
So far, the 49ers have added:
DT Jordan Elliott (Browns, 2-yr, $10M)
DE Leonard Floyd (Bills, 2-yr, $20M)
LB Eric Kendricks (Chargers, 1-yr)
DE Yetur Gross-Matos (Panthers, 2-yr, $18M)
DT Maliek Collins (trade with Texans)
I can't help but notice that all these players are on defense. Does this mean the 49ers will go heavy on offense during the draft? Perhaps. We'll see how the rest
Charvarius Ward willing to help 49ers land Tre'Davious White
The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand.
Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction.
Ward described White as a "hand in glove
