San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is working his way back from an ankle injury. According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, he will practice with his teammates this afternoon but be limited.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that Garoppolo will play on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

"The fact that he's coming out today and getting a little more reps, it has (made me more optimistic)," Shanahan said. "I haven't seen him yet. I mean, he did a good job in walk-through, and we'll see how he goes. We're going to throw him in there today, and that will give me more of an opinion, at least."

Garoppolo has missed the last two games after sustaining his injury during Week 2 against the New York Jets.

Shanahan informed reporters that running back Raheem Mostert (knee) will also practice but be limited.

While Shanahan knows who his starting quarterback would be should Garoppolo not play on Sunday, he didn't want to reveal that player's name just yet.

"Yes, I have (decided on who would start)," Shanahan said, "but I'm going to hold that just because there is a difference between them, and if Jimmy can't go, I'd like Miami to find that out on Sunday. I've decided that.

"We'll get both of them reps because both of them do have to be ready in case Jimmy doesn't go, but if not, you guys will find that answer on which one's not dressed (on game day)."

Shanahan also provided the following injury updates:

  • Defensive end Ziggy Ansah and cornerback K'Waun Williams will be placed on injured reserve soon.
  • Cornerback Dontae Johnson is dealing with a groin injury.
  • Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is still in the concussion protocol.
  • Safety Jimmie Ward will not practice today due to a wrist injury. Shanahan did not sound too concerned about the injury.

None of the players listed above will practice today.

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,
