49ers-Jets: Ahkello Witherspoon has cleared concussion protocol, will replace Richard Sherman, says John Lynch

Sep 18, 2020 at 8:37 AM--

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined KNBR on Friday morning and provided several injury updates. Among them was news that cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has cleared the concussion protocol and will start in place of Richard Sherman this weekend against the New York Jets.

Sherman was placed on short-term injured reserve this week and will miss at least the next three games. Lynch did note that his calf strain is unrelated to his previous Achilles injury.

The general manager saw Sherman after the game and noted, "It wasn't pretty the way he was walking."

That, along with discussions with Sherman, led the 49ers to sideline the All-Pro cornerback for a few games.

Witherspoon will fill in for the veteran cornerback and play opposite Emmanuel Moseley.

"He cleared (the concussion protocol)," Lynch said on the Murph & Mac show. "The nice thing about that these days ... there's so many protocols. I feel like we live in protocols, but it actually helps with the concussions because it takes it out of the coaches' hands, out of anyone's hands other than there's a very strict and serious protocol. They have to meet these steps.

"... He's done great. He's really responded well, feels good. So it looks like he's going to be going."

It sounds like help is on the way for the San Francisco 49ers cornerbacks. Emmanuel Moseley, who has missed the last two games due to a concussion, was back at practice on Wednesday, albeit in a blue no-contact jersey. Moseley was without the blue jersey on Thursday, which indicates that the starting cornerback has been cleared from the concussion protocol and could be set to play on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. No more blue jersey for #49ers CB Emmanuel Moseley at today's practice. It appears he's cleared

49ers-Dolphins: Kyle Shanahan explains why it took so long to replace Brian Allen with Ahkello Witherspoon

By David Bonilla

Were you wondering what took so long for San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan to pull Brian Allen after it was clear the Miami Dolphins were targeting and embarrassing the cornerback early? Shanahan explained his reasoning after the 43-17 defeat that left the 49ers still winless at home. "Just because of how down we were (with the cornerback numbers) going into the game," Shanahan told reporters. "We got him off of practice squad this week with the injuries that we had. (Ken) Webster was his backup." Ahkello Witherspoon eventually replaced Allen, but much of the damage had already been done. "Ahkello, he tried to go this week," Shanahan continued, "but he was too tight to go throughout practice this week. Because of our low

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Monday, the day after the team's 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Here is everything he had to say. Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. Opening comments: "All right guys, injuries. [LB] Kwon Alexander, didn't have it last night, but he has a possible high ankle sprain. We don't know the severity of it yet. We'll find out more on that by Wednesday. [DL] D.J. Jones, eye. I expect him back at practice Wednesday. Go ahead." This question comes in light of a couple of the decisions as far as who to start and who not to start yesterday. I realize players often side or err on the side of wanting to play, but
