Kyle Shanahan has transformed the 49ers offense into a superpower, says PFF

Anthony Treash of Pro Football Focus ranked all 32 NFL offenses heading into the 2020 season.

"Several factors were considered, such as quarterback situation," wrote Treash. "PFF play-by-play grading, PFF WAR added and lost, the unit's playcaller and per-play efficiency in 2019."

Kyle Shanahan's offense in San Francisco came in at No. 8, with five NFC squads ranked above his. That includes the division-rival Seattle Seahawks, who came in two spots above the 49ers at No. 6.

"Kyle Shanahan has transformed this offense into a superpower," wrote Treash. "A season ago, the 49ers produced the seventh-most-efficient offense in terms of EPA per play and caused headaches for the opposition through heavy motion and play-action usage."

While the leader of that offense, Jimmy Garoppolo, had the seventh-lowest rate of uncatchable throws last season, according to Pro Football Focus, and produced the 13th-best passing grade in regular-season play, he was not without his flaws. That was evident by his 13 interceptions in 2019.

"He still struggles to see linebackers and makes too many bad decisions over the middle of the field, but make no mistake, San Francisco can win with Garoppolo at the helm," notes Treash.

Shanahan and Garoppolo also have the NFL's best tight end, George Kittle, at their disposal. But the 49ers receivers have been plagued by injuries this offseason.

"Firstly, Deebo Samuel's status for Week 1 is currently up in the air as he nurses a broken foot, though he isn't expected to miss a significant amount of time," wrote Treash. "The second-year receiver ranked second in yards after the catch per reception (8.5) and tied for first in broken tackles (18) last year, so the team will be hoping that he can return to the starting lineup sooner rather than later."

Rookie Brandon Aiyuk, who looks to replace Emmanuel Sanders' production from last season, has also missed some time due to a hamstring injury. Shanahan, however, seems optimistic that Aiyuk will be available for September 13's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

"Aiyuk averaged 10.9 yards after the catch per reception in 2019," added Treash, "so he should be an explosive weapon for this passing attack once he gets on the field."

Then you have the No. 2 rushing attack from 2019, led by breakout star Raheem Mostert and complemented by Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon. Treash isn't too concerned with who is carrying the football out of the backfield, though, as Shanahan's genius tends to find a way to create production with the run game.

PFF mock draft has 49ers adding cornerback with 'unique fluidity and size'

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

Analyst Steve Palazzolo unveiled a first-round mock draft for Pro Football Focus, attempting to forecast the selections for each NFL team within the top 32 picks. While the San Francisco 49ers concentrated on strengthening the defensive line in free agency, Palazzolo envisions the team continuing to fortify that side of the ball. In his mock draft, Palazzolo predicts that the 49ers will select former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "Tampa's unique fluidity and size for a cornerback make him worthy of a top-75 pick," reads the analysis from Pro Football Focus' big board. "If he can clean up his footwork, he can

The San Francisco 49ers have experienced success in the latter two days of the draft, discovering hidden gems capable of becoming key contributors. Some examples include tight end George Kittle in the fifth round in 2017, linebacker Fred Warner in the third round in 2018, wide receiver Deebo Samuel in the second round in 2019, and, famously, quarterback Brock Purdy with the final overall pick in 2022. Pro Football Focus recently pinpointed one draft fit for each team on Day 2 and another for Day 3. Contributor Dalton Wasserman handled the duties for Day 2, zeroing in on former Oregon defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus, who can excel on the edge or interior in

PFF high on this cornerback for 49ers in mock draft

Analyst Dane Brugler of The Athletic grades former Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa as a second or third-round draft pick and ranks him 55th overall on his big board. Pro Football Focus, however, holds a higher opinion of the young defensive back. In his latest mock draft, the site's lead analyst, Sam Monson, has the San Francisco 49ers selecting Tampa with the No. 31 overall pick. "T.J. Tampa fits the prototype of a 49ers cornerback," Monson explains. "He has had consecutive seasons of very impressive play and allowed just 240 yards on 49 targets last season. The team doesn't necessarily need him to make an immediate impact, but they could

Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,
