‘I’m real happy with our safeties’: Kyle Shanahan says 49ers are not interested in Earl Thomas

Aug 25, 2020 at 1:05 PM--

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after Tuesday's practice and was asked if the team had any interest in signing recently released veteran safety Earl Thomas.

The short answer: No.

That's because Shanahan seems content with the safeties already on the roster.

"I'm real happy with our safeties," Shanahan said. "Nothing against Earl, but there wasn't interest just because we have our team. We have the guys we want in our spot, and I think this is how we planned it. We have some good competition, too, with the guys who are behind them. We're excited about our group."

The Baltimore Ravens released Thomas over the weekend after the safety punched a teammate during practice.

Thomas, 31, is a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro. He is entering his 11th NFL season.

San Francisco will start the 2020 season with Jimmie Ward and Jaquiski Tartt as its starting safeties. The team also has Tarvarius Moore, Marcell Harris, and newcomer Johnathan Cyprien on its depth chart.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without both of their starting safeties on Sunday when they travel to Gillette Stadium to play the New England Patriots. Jaquiski Tartt has been dealing with a groin injury all week and has been ruled out. Head coach Kyle Shanahan surprised reporters on Friday with the news that Jimmie Ward suffered an injury during Thursday's practice and also will not play. "He strained his quad in practice yesterday," Shanahan said. "So, we got the MRI back late last night, and he's not going to be able to go this week." The coach was asked if the injury could force Ward to miss multiple games. "It could," Shanahan responded. "They gave it, I think, a 1.5 grade. I don't think it would be real long, but we know for sure he's not

ESPN speculates on 49ers-Le'Veon Bell connection, Kyle Shanahan says "I'm good with all our guys"

Bill Barnwell of ESPN speculated on potential landing spots for recently-released running back Le'Veon Bell, formerly of the New York Jets. And that's really all it was — speculation. Still, the San Francisco 49ers were on Barnwell's list of plausible suitors. Much of that seems to do with the 49ers' past interest in Bell. The team pursued Bell last year in free agency before the running back agreed to join the Jets. Head coach Kyle Shanahan compared the pursuit of Bell to the team targeting and signing Tevin Coleman. "The

Kyle Shanahan says Jimmy Garoppolo has looked good in practice, is expected to help 49ers vs. Rams

By David Bonilla

Head coach Kyle Shanahan sounds confident that Jimmy Garoppolo's next outing will be better than his last. Hindered by his ankle injury, the quarterback was pulled after two quarters this past Sunday in the Niners' embarrassing 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins. "Jimmy threw it good in warmups. He threw it good on the Thursday and Friday of practice (last week)," Shanahan said on KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "But when you do have a high-ankle sprain, that [can] come back in a game. And he got sacked a few times before that, and he started to throw it a little bit differently. You could tell it was affecting him a little bit. That's why I do think it affected a number of his throws after that. "And the way the game was going, and when I could
