There may be some doubt among certain segments of the media surrounding quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's ability to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a championship. He came within minutes of doing so in February, but a fourth-quarter collapse in the Super Bowl doomed the team's chances, and Garoppolo, perhaps unfairly, has shouldered much of the blame.
New 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams, who joined 95.7 The Game on Friday, believes in his new quarterback. Williams feels that he can finally win a championship with Garoppolo.
"I had an up-close and personal chance to watch them for the whole past year, to watch the successful run, and to see how he led the team," Williams said on the Joe, Lo and Dibs show. "You see when he wasn't on the team, when he lost a whole year due to the ACL, it was just a totally different team.
"I think, so many times, we look for stats to justify how a person is playing. He passes the eye test. You look at him; he's always in a good situation. He runs the offense exactly how Kyle needs it to be ran. You can win a Super Bowl with a guy like Jimmy."
San Francisco's quarterback wasn't the only thing that attracted Williams to the 49ers. He loved watching how much fun the team was having during its Super Bowl run.
"They're playing the game the right way," Williams added. "They're playing smart. They have a trend-setting coach, who's not scared to be different. When you're a competitor, you gravitate towards situations like that.
"Me just kind of stepping into a Super Bowl ready team, I feel like it's going to challenge me to bring the best out of me because I know they can win without me, that's for sure. Hopefully, I can be that guy to come in and add to the team."
