San Francisco 49ers running back Tevin Coleman suffered a dislocated shoulder during Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Monday. The team is awaiting more results from the MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
Shanahan has not ruled out Coleman for Super Bowl LIV. The running back does not need to undergo surgery.
"We've got to wait until we get the stuff back, so I don't want to speculate too much. ... I expect him to have a chance to play," Shanahan said.
Shanahan went on to describe the injury as more of a "Lethal Weapon-type thing, where you've got to pop it back in."
Coleman left Sunday's game in the second quarter following a four-yard run and with San Francisco leading Green Bay 10-0. He was initially listed as "questionable" to return due to a shoulder injury but was later downgraded to "out."
Coleman was being looked at on the sideline by 49ers medical staff but eventually had to be carted off the field. He later returned to the sideline with his arm in a sling so he could watch his teammates beat the Packers 37-20 and advance to Super Bowl LIV, where they will face the Kansas City Chiefs.
San Francisco signed Coleman to a two-year deal last March. He finished the regular season with 137 carries for 544 rushing yards with six touchdowns. Coleman finished Sunday's game with 21 rushing yards on six carries and had 105 rushing yards on 22 carries a week earlier against the Minnesota Vikings.
Running back Raheem Mostert received the bulk of the workload against the Packers, finishing the game with 29 carries for 220 rushing yards and four touchdowns. His rushing yards total ranks second all-time to Eric Dickerson's single-game playoff record of 248 rushing yards.
Shanahan also noted that safety Jaquiski Tartt "irritated" the rib injury that forced him to miss the final four games of the regular season. He is expected to be fine.
"He just irritated the same area but no new damage," Shanahan said. "He's got to deal with some pain, I'm sure, this week. But it's nice that the game is two weeks away."
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw suffered a low-ankle sprain but is also expected to be ready for Super Bowl LIV.
