Jimmy Garoppolo's return to the football field after last year's season-ending ACL injury was a big storyline heading into the season. Many felt the quarterback would need to have a productive season for the San Francisco 49ers to be successful.
Garoppolo's 49ers are 7-0, but it's not necessarily because he is doing anything extraordinary this season. Not that he is playing poorly. It's just that the defense has been the big storyline in San Francisco's undefeated start.
And Garoppolo is okay with that.
"I'm alright with being undefeated, yeah," the smiling 49ers quarterback told reporters on Tuesday.
Garoppolo was asked how he feels about not being a focal point in the 49ers' impressive 2019 story.
"I wouldn't say it's a weird feeling. It's a great feeling being in the position that we're in," Garoppolo responded. "So, as a quarterback, just trying to put guys in position to be successful, get them the ball, let them make plays in space, and let them take care of the rest."
Garoppolo has completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for 1,489 yards with nine touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a passer rating of 93.6 through seven games. More importantly, he is 13-2 as a 49ers starter and 15-2 overall throughout his career.
The 49ers are preparing to play the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night — a team San Francisco hasn't beaten since 2014. Of course, that's not something the players are talking about.
"I didn't even know that," Garoppolo said when told about the losing streak. "New season, new team. Can't really worry about the past but, yeah, we'd love to break that streak."
