San Francisco 49ers head coach has 11 days to decide who his starting quarterback will be when the team takes the field on Monday, November 12 against the New York Giants.

Nick Mullens made his NFL debut on Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders and was impressive during the 34-3 victory. He completed 16-of-22 pass attempts for 262 yards with three touchdowns and a passer rating of 151.9, becoming the first player to throw for two-or-more touchdowns in his 49ers debut.

Mullens played because fellow second-year quarterback C.J. Beathard was dealing with right wrist and thumb injuries during the abbreviated week of preperation.

"The players got four days off," Shanahan said on Friday. "I don't need to decide, yet, so I'm taking my time with it. And also, I wouldn't want to do that with all of the guys out of the building. I'd like the whole team in here, too, when I decide that."

Shanahan was asked what will go into the decision on a starting quarterback for Week 10.

"Just who we think gives us the best chance to win versus the Giants," he responded.

Mullens entered Thursday night's game and engineered a six-play, 75-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Pierre Garçon on the team's opening drive.

The 49ers signed Mullens as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss last year. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad and was promoted to the active roster on September 26 following the season-ending injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

While Shanahan has an opportunity to evaluate the quarterback situation on the team and decide who would be the best backup to Garoppolo next season, the head coach is focused on right now.

"We're going to take these few days off," Shanahan said. "When we come back in, it's going to be all thinking about the Giants, not really thinking who gives us our best chance to have our best backup next year. It will be about the Giants and that will be the decision as we go through the year.

"When we get to the end of the year, those are things I'll think about very hard."

Mike Silver on how Deebo Samuel's contract might be the starting point for a Brandon Aiyuk extension

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night. Legendary columnist Mike Silver joined

49ers mailbag: Will Brandon Aiyuk be on the roster on Friday morning? Will SF draft another quarterback?

By Marc Adams

We're just over 24 hours before round one of the NFL Draft begins. The San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to have their first pick in the opening round since 2021 when they drafted Trey Lance. That didn't turn out well, but there is optimism that the team will be able to make its roster better over the next few days. GM John Lynch spoke on Monday and said there's a possibility the team could trade out of the first round. I doubt that would go over well with the fanbase, especially since they haven't had a first-rounder in the past two years. But if it's a good trade that lands the 49ers some quality picks, we could see that happen, especially if there aren't any players at pick 31 that the team is excited about. We opened up the 49ers Webzone Mailbag to see what

Breaking down the 49ers drafts under John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan

By Marc Adams
Apr 20

We are less than one week away from the NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers have their first day-one draft pick since 2021. That was the year they selected QB Trey Lance number three overall. The trade-up to get Lance cost the 49ers their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. And now that they are back in the first round, at pick 31, fans are anxious to see what the team does with the pick. And with former assistant GM, Adam Peters, now in Washington, it will be interesting to see how well the 49ers draft without Peters in the room. We looked back at the seven drafts GM John Lynch and Head Coach Kyle Shanahan have led to see what information we could pull from those drafts. There were plenty of hits, plenty of misses, and a few surprises along the way. The draft picks are
