Linebacker Reuben Foster returned to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday after serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's conduct and substances of abuse policies. The players do not hit the practice field on Mondays. Instead, they spend most of the day reviewing the film from the previous game and working with coaches in the meeting rooms.

Foster will join his teammates on the practice field on Wednesday. The 49ers will not need to immediately make a roster move to account for the second-year linebacker's return.

"I think we get two days once he gets here to do that," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday. "So we have to do it at the end of the week."

What's the plan for Foster, who hasn't been allowed at the 49ers' facility for the past two weeks?

"We'll discuss more of that tonight," Shanahan answered. "We've kind of just been finishing up all this game stuff now. We'll see how he is in practice on Wednesday. We'll see how the week goes, but he's only been gone two weeks. I know he's been working hard while he's been away. I plan on him being in there pretty fast."

Elijah Lee started alongside rookie Fred Warner against the Detroit Lions. He had 12 combined tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble during the game. Foster will likely take over Lee's spot when the 49ers face the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, assuming everything goes as planned.

San Francisco made Foster the No. 31 overall draft pick last year. He started 10 games during his rookie campaign while registering 72 combined tackles with a pass defensed.
