The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Marquise Goodwin to a three-year extension on Thursday. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the deal to be worth $20.3 million with $10 million guaranteed.

On Thursday afternoon, Goodwin jumped on a conference call with the media to discuss his new deal. He is grateful for the opportunity to compete at the NFL level against great players. Goodwin is also thankful that he gets to remain with his 49ers teammates and coaches. He called the way the team came together and ended the 2017 season "a blessing."

"For me to have that opportunity to go into next year to continue some of the things that we kind of started is a true blessing," Goodwin told reporters.

After four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Goodwin signed a two-year deal with the 49ers on March 9, 2017. He started all 16 games for San Francisco last season and registered a career-high 56 receptions for 962 yards (also a career-high) with two touchdowns. A concussion suffered during the 49ers' Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams kept Goodwin from surpassing 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his NFL career.

What are Goodwin's goals for the 2018 season?

"My goal is to stay healthy and win games," he said. "That's it. Sorry [the answer] is so short, but that's just the truth."

Goodwin took over as the 49ers' number one receiver after a neck injury ended the season of Pierre Garçon after eight games. Once Jimmy Garoppolo took over as the starting quarterback, Goodwin flourished. He averaged over 106 receiving yards per game in Garoppolo's first three starts for the 49ers.

Goodwin was asked if he feels head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense brings the best out of him.

"I definitely feel like this offense is good for me in the sense that it allows me to be football player," he answered. "It gives me an opportunity to get out there and to make plays, and that's what you always want in a scheme and in a system. It's not just targeting me. Everyone gets to shine, and that's what's good about his offense. It's not a one-man wrecking crew. It's not one guy just making it happen. It's a lot of guys that are getting an opportunity to make plays."

Goodwin was a third-round draft pick out of Texas by the Bills in 2013. Over his five-year career, he has appeared in 55 games with 26 starts and registered 105 receptions for 1,742 yards and eight touchdowns.

After being used ineffectively in Buffalo, Goodwin believes the decision to sign with the 49ers may have saved his career.

"I'm really blessed and fortunate because it could have all ended after Buffalo or I could have been in a worse situation and not had this year to have a solid season," he said. "A lot of things could have gone wrong."
