LB Jimmie Gilbert clears waivers, will be placed on 49ers IR

Aug 2, 2017 at 3:47 PM--

Linebacker Jimmie Gilbert, who suffered a torn ACL during San Francisco 49ers training camp, was waived Monday evening with an "injured" designation. In a corresponding move, the 49ers claimed wide receiver Tim Patrick off of waivers from the Baltimore Ravens to take Gilbert's spot on the roster. Patrick took part in his first 49ers practice on Wednesday.

Gilbert has cleared waivers, reverted back to the 49ers, and will be placed on injured reserve.

Gilbert was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent on May 4 after playing college football at Colorado. During his four years with the Buffaloes, he had 147 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 20 sacks, and eight forced fumbles.

The same scenario played out for wide receiver B.J. Johnson, who was also waived with an "injured" designation on Monday. The next day, he reverted back to the 49ers and will also spend the 2017 season on injured reserve.

Well, this one was a bit of a shocker. The San Francisco 49ers gambled and waived D.J. Reed with an injury designation this week, anticipating that the safety would clear waivers and revert to the team's NFI reserve list. That's not how things played out. The Seattle Seahawks, of course, swooped in and claimed Reed. The move is a curious one, as general manager John Lynch said on Monday that the safety isn't expected to be healthy until maybe early November. In a season about to be played amid a pandemic, roster spots are more valuable than ever. Of course: The

Jimmie Ward says Jason Verrett looks focused, ready, and anxious to prove himself

The San Francisco 49ers admittedly gambled on signing Jason Verrett last offseason. Why would it be a gamble to add a Pro Bowl cornerback to your defense? After being a first-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2014, Verrett had just one healthy season — that 2015 Pro Bowl year. He has landed on injured reserve in each of his other five NFL seasons, including last season with the 49ers. Verrett nearly made it back in 2019. He made one game appearance, taking part in just four defensive snaps before being sidelined for the remainder of the season. Safety Jimmie Ward knows what it's like to be plagued by injuries. He landed on injured reserve four times before last year's breakout performance in a season during which he managed to remain relatively healthy.

49ers' Jimmie Ward unwilling to reveal defensive secrets: 'Just make sure you watch that first game'

By David Bonilla

Jimmie Ward isn't too sure who might be listening. Pete Carroll, is that you breathing on the line? The safety was unwilling to offer up any details on what the San Francisco 49ers are planning to do in the secondary this season. Chris Biderman attempted to pry some details about the plan, noting that he noticed Ward often playing man-to-man close to the line of scrimmage on third downs in the Super Bowl. The Sacramento Bee beat writer inquired whether or not that is something opposing offenses might see more in 2020. "I just feel like if I tell you more details about that, I'm kind of giving away the game plan," a cautious Ward responded. "I don't want other teams to hear it, how they're going to use me. I don't know, but it's going to be
