Addition of Collie Could Pay Big Dividends for 49ers

Aug 7, 2013 at 9:15 AM--

Austin Collie certainly wasn't in the 49ers' plans for 2013.This past offseason, the Niners seemed to have a wealth of wideouts, with the addition of Anquan Boldin to a group that includes Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, A.J. Jenkins, Ricardo Lockette and Quinton Patton. But after Crabtree was lost for possibly the entire season with an Achilles' tendon tear and then injuries depleted the group further early in training camp at Santa Clara, the Niners began looking for more options. Suddenly, there was Collie, a veteran free agent. Now the four-year NFL veteran – who has three seasons of 50 or more catches – seems to have a good chance to make San Francisco's opening-day roster. After signing with the 49ers last week, Collie has played well in practices and drills and will get his first chance to show what he can do in live game action Thursday night when the Broncos play the 49ers at Candlestick Park in the exhibition opener. As the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reported this week, Collie has looked good.On Tuesday, Collie caught a deep pass against the 49ers' "D" from quarterback B.J. Daniels, getting past safety Michael Thomas. It was notable,...

Brock Purdy hopes Kyle Shanahan makes addition to 49ers playbook

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy threw for a franchise-record 4,280 yards last season, leading the team to the Super Bowl and earning his first Pro Bowl selection. He held onto the football 39 times on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and scoring twice. This marked a significant improvement over his rookie 2022 campaign when he had 22 carries for 13 yards and a score. Purdy further displayed his athleticism during the 49ers' playoff game against the Detroit Lions last season, helping engineer a comeback victory while rushing for 48 yards on five carries. On Tuesday morning, Purdy joined the "Pat McAfee Show," acknowledging that he believes he can contribute more rushing yards if called upon. However, that decision rests with head coach Kyle Shanahan,

Deebo Samuel and Brock Purdy are why the 49ers can afford to pay Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 10

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago. Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023

By David Bonilla

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, ESPN contributors have highlighted some prospects who have seen their draft stock rise throughout the evaluation process. Jordan Reid and Matt Miller pinpointed players who could hear their names called at the end of the first round. Interestingly, both of the prospects identified by Reid and Miller play in the trenches but on different sides of the ball. The San Francisco 49ers are widely expected to draft an offensive lineman with their first selection—No. 31 overall. The team mostly ignored the group in free agency. However, it wouldn't surprise many people if the

Could the 49ers trade up in the draft for a top tackle?

By David Bonilla
Apr 11

The San Francisco 49ers are likely hoping that a top offensive lineman drops to them at No. 31 in the first round of this month's draft. Fans would like to see the team add someone to compete with Colton McKivitz for the right tackle spot and potentially take over for Trent Williams when the future Hall of Famer decides to retire. Having two studs bookending the offensive line would go a long way in protecting franchise quarterback Brock Purdy. While tackle may be the first-round target, depending on how the first 30 selections play out, San Francisco might have to trade up to get a genuinely impactful
