49ers have re-signed two players who no other team would acquire if cut
I actually have been a fan of the 49ers moves so far. There are however, two moves that make me question that sanity.
When I read that Craig Dahl restructured his contract, I was excited. The veteran minimum with 7-9 years is $870,000. So why are we paying more?
In essence Dahl was going to be paid $1.7 million this year, and now we will pay him $400k less.
2015
Cap Figure: $1,533,334
Base salary: $875,000 ($450k guaranteed)
Pro-rated bonus: $433,334 ($200k signing bonus added to his last contract)
Roster bonus: $175,000
Workout bonus: $50,000
I think the 49ers were generous with Dahl. You bring him into the office and tell him you are going to release him and no one else will sign him. You offer him 1 year for $950,000. They should point to the fact that he sometimes runs the opposite direction of the receivers when he plays safety. We can sign special team players through the draft with young fresh legs, we do not need Dahl! The highlight of Dahl's 49er career was the fake punt run vs. the Chiefs that resulted in a first down. He led the team with 14 special team tackles last season.
The second head scratcher is with Blaine Gabbert. If the 49ers did not give Kaepernick an extension last year, Gabbert would have made more money than him as a backup. To give Gabbert some credit, he is the only 49ers QB to throw a 4th quarter td last season.
Let's go back to when Blaine Gabbert was good in the NFL…….
Moving on, I am not sure why 49ers are giving out $2 million per year for a backup. He has $800k per year in incentives that will not be earned. He has $750k tied to playing time, and $50k tied to each pro Bowl selection.
Just because Gabbert was picked in the first round, does not mean he is a first round talent. 2011 was not the year of the quarter back in the draft. I still think Kaepernick is the best qb in that draft. Cam Newton was selected #1 overall, but I still would rather have Kaepernick.
The 49ers were scouting Gabbert in 2011, and I think they are using him as an insurance policy. If Kap gets hurt or traded (Eagles) he can become the starter. If this happens we are in tons of trouble. I do think Torrey Smith is a better receiver for Kap, than Crabtree was.

Dahl can be frustrating in coverage. But, he provides veteran leadership. And, you signal to your players and others that you take care of your own, recognize and pay for those intangible qualities. Grabbert is no mystery. The Niners have eyed Gabbert in the 2011 draft. True a butch of QB's were over drafted that year. But, Gabbert has upside physically. He is more gifted than Pnder or Dalton, sturdier than Locker. He can still be prototype NFL QB.. He played on a really bad team and may recover from she'll shoc.

You have been a fan of the 49ers moves? Can you explain why? The retirements of Borland and Willis were shocking but they had nothing to do with management issues, However, York and Baalke did nothing to fix our OLine/DLine and CB issues. This is one of the worst off seasons ever. And yes, I do take the salary cap into consideration but it does not explain our signings. We might have 9 picks and they all should help. I really do not want to be a negative nancy but playoffs are pretty far.... in terms of time and games and the chance to get their.

The reason they're keeping Dahl is mostly for his ST play...he's good there. Who knows, someone else could beat him out. As for Gabbert, I'm not sure why they're keeping him...he hasn't shown me much, but maybe new QB Coach Logan can get something out of him. The money you're talking about isn't much, in the big scheme of things, really. It's a long way to training camp...I wouldn't be too worried about these guys in March.

I am not a fan of 49er moves due to the fact that their was never a reload to this team. Thanks to York and Baalke this team is only giving an appearance that it will be able to compete in this league however we are in for a very rude awakening. Like York and Baalke have been known to do they are setting up the fortyniners for failure and in doing so they Will get rid of more players like Kap n blame him for the terrible season we are about to endure. We are bringing in old players knowing were just bringing big names but at the end of their careers it's all an illusion for York and Baalke to say we gave them the tools Kap needed. Their is a different agenda here for the owner and GM sadly we are now in full stages of REBUILDING for the next six years. As a true niner fan I am heartbroken to see my team go through this. The only ones happy with the choices we have made is every other team we face this season. Mark my words York and Baalke will blame everyone else except the true culprits ... Themselves

Two reported 49ers pre-draft visits didn't end up happening
Despite initial reports, two draft prospects who were set to visit the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft ultimately did not meet with the team. Matt Barrows of The Athletic revealed that former USC wide receiver Brenden Rice and former Oregon safety Jamal Hill didn't end up visiting the Bay Area organization.
Barrows wrote, "Meanwhile, a report in March indicated that USC receiver Brenden Rice, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, would visit the 49ers, but he didn't end up coming, according to two league sources."
