At the NFL Scouting Combine, the 6-foot and 198-pound Brown had a 40-time of 4.35 seconds, a vertical jump of 31.5 inches, a broad jump of 126 inches, completed the three-cone drill in 6.78 seconds, had 14 reps in the bench press, a 20-yard shuttle time of 4.11 seconds, and a 60-yard shuttle time of 11.14 seconds.
Brown recorded 10 tackles in 13 games and two starts as a true freshman for the Crimson Tide in 2014. During his junior year in 2016, he registered 32 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and two interceptions. As a senior, Brown played in all 14 games with one start and compiled 31 tackles, an interception, and two passes defensed.
"He had his issues while at school, being sent home before the team's 2015 bowl game," writes Lance Zierlein of NFL Media, "and then suspended indefinitely by the NCAA for unspecified reasons (reported for failed drug tests). The suspension was limited to the first four games of the 2016 season on appeal."
The 49ers are in need of some help at cornerback. They ended last season with rookie Ahkello Witherspoon and veteran Dontae Johnson as starters. Witherspoon has started just nine NFL games and Johnson, who is scheduled to become a free agent next week, was benched twice late last year.
According to a report by ESPN, the 49ers were in trade talks with the Denver Broncos to potentially acquire Aqib Talib, but the cornerback would prefer to be released and choose his own destination – which preferably includes the New England Patriots.
NFL.com projects that Brown will be selected in round 4 of the NFL Draft.
Lance Zierlein of NFL Media, who compares Brown to Johnson Bademosi, had the following to say in his scouting report:
"Brown is a physical nickel cornerback with a major in run support and a minor in special teams cover talent. Brown has too much tightness in his lower half to match routes and make plays on the ball, but his ability to support the run could lead teams to beef him up and try him at a hybrid linebacker role in sub-packages. Brown is going to run well at the Combine and should be drafted on the third day for his special teams talent alone."
