Draft gaffes leave glaring roster gaps

In Week 4, 49ers inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman suffered a torn Achilles tendon that ended his season. In Week 6, running back Carlos Hyde sustained a shoulder injury and head coach Chip Kelly said Wednesday it would be a "stretch" for him to play Sunday against Tampa Bay. [...] they figure to rotate running backs Mike Davis and Shaun Draughn, two men who are combining to average 2 yards a carry, if Hyde can't play. The deficiencies at the positions at least partly explain why the 49ers (1-5) are on their first five-game losing streak since 2010 and have the NFL's third-worst point margin (minus-58). Baalke's decisions were questioned in April when he didn't select an inside linebacker and waited until the sixth round to select a quarterback and running back. After the first round, in which the 49ers selected defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and guard Joshua Garnett, Baalke was asked if he considered trading up for a quarterback instead of taking Garnett. On the draft's second day, the question persisted after Baalke used an early third-round pick (No. 68) on Mississippi State cornerback Will Redmond. After Baalke selected Redmond, who hasn't played this season because of an...

Former NFL WR: Brandon Aiyuk told me he doesn't want to leave 49ers
By David Bonilla
Apr 22
Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh claims to have recently spoken to Brandon Aiyuk, stating that the star player has no desire to leave the San Francisco 49ers.
Aiyuk and the 49ers are currently negotiating a contract extension, aiming to finalize a new deal. Of course, that hasn't prevented significant media speculation surrounding Aiyuk's future, with many wondering if the delay might hint at a potential trade.
Well-informed 49ers fans know that the team typically finalizes its significant contract extensions closer to training camp, as seen with George Kittle in 2020, Fred Warner in 2021, and Deebo Samuel in 2022. Last year, negotiations with Nick Bosa concluded just days before Week
49ers mailbag: Will Brandon Aiyuk be on the roster on Friday morning? Will SF draft another quarterback?

We're just over 24 hours before round one of the NFL Draft begins. The San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to have their first pick in the opening round since 2021 when they drafted Trey Lance. That didn't turn out well, but there is optimism that the team will be able to make its roster better over the next few days.
GM John Lynch spoke on Monday and said there's a possibility the team could trade out of the first round. I doubt that would go over well with the fanbase, especially since they haven't had a first-rounder in the past two years. But if it's a good trade that lands the 49ers some quality picks, we could see that happen, especially if there aren't any players at pick 31 that the team is excited about.

Amidst swirling trade rumors surrounding Brandon Aiyuk, the speculation surrounding Deebo Samuel's future with the San Francisco 49ers seems to have quieted down.
According to Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have assured Samuel that he will not be involved in any pre- or post-draft transactions, ensuring his place on the roster for the time being.
"Samuel, who signed a three-year, $71.55 million extension before the 2022 season, has been assured by his bosses that he will not be dealt during or after the draft," Silver reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.

49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
By David Bonilla
Apr 16
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
