49ers’ Torrey Smith paying price for signing $40 million deal

Oct 4, 2016 at 4:15 PM--

Last year, in the 49ers' fourth regular-season game, a 17-3 home loss to the Packers, wide receiver Torrey Smith angrily ripped off his chinstrap and stormed to the bench after a third-down throw from Colin Kaepernick was wildly off target. Smith later acknowledged his emotions got the best of him during the 49ers' third straight loss. On Sunday, in the 49ers' fourth regular-season game, a 24-17 home loss to the Cowboys, Smith angrily hurled his helmet to the ground as he stormed to the bench after a deep throw from Blaine Gabbert was badly underthrown and intercepted. On Tuesday, Smith acknowledged his emotions got the best of him during the 49ers' third straight loss. The 49ers are giving Smith a lot of cash, but the wide receiver is clearly paying a price for signing a five-year, $40 million deal last year. With Anquan Boldin in Detroit, Smith is the 49ers' slam-dunk No. 1 wide receiver this season, but he ranks 70th in the NFL in targets (22) and is on pace for 36 catches and 424 yards. On Tuesday, Smith was asked if he'd been receiving an inordinate amount of attention from secondaries this season. The speedy Smith is probably pining for the days when he paired with Ravens...

By David Bonilla

This week, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York remarked that the team is preparing to offer quarterback Brock Purdy a substantial deal next year. York views this as a "good problem" because it signifies that, after several setbacks, the 49ers have finally identified their franchise signal-caller. "I mean, it's what the market is," York said at the NFL owners meetings. "It's not like Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. You have, I don't know how many players making over $40 million as a quarterback right now." York added, "And whether I like it or not, that's what the market is, and you have to accept the reality of the world. And to me, the

49ers Notebook: Crucial offseason for Purdy; O-line confidence; Shanahan on new kickoff rule, Dobbs signing; Hufanga eyes training camp return

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't have to field as many quarterback questions as he did a year ago after Brock Purdy underwent surgery, the arrival of Sam Darnold, and the uncertainty surrounding the future of Trey Lance. The quarterback situation is clearer now than it has been in recent years. For Purdy, this offseason holds significant importance. It marks the first time he can focus on on-field improvement during minicamps, OTAs, and training camp. While he had this opportunity as a rookie in 2022, he was buried on the depth chart, limiting his practice reps. Last year, Purdy was still recovering from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He didn't get to throw to his teammates until training camp in

By Site Staff
Mar 25

At the start of free agency, the San Francisco 49ers signed defensive end Leonard Floyd to a two-year deal worth $20 million, with $12 million guaranteed. It has been the team's most significant offseason move thus far. OverTheCap.com recently revealed Floyd's contract details. While the deal may be for two years, three void years are attached to the contract, allowing the defensive end's $10.79 million signing bonus to be spread through 2028. Floyd's impact in 2024 is minimal. He is scheduled to earn a guaranteed $1.21 million base salary and count only $3.418 million against this year's salary cap. The following are the details of Floyd's
