Check on checkdowns: Where 49ers’ Gabbert ranks on fruitless 3rd-down completions

Sep 30, 2016 at 9:45 AM--

Where 49ers' Gabbert ranks on fruitless 3rd-down completions Yes, 49ers fans, we know what you think: No quarterback throws more maddening third-down completions than Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert, whose penchant for throwing third-down passes short of the first-down sticks has been well-documented, has had 47.1 percent (8 of 17) of his third-down completions result in first downs, according to ProFootballReference.com. [...] it's not the worst percentage in the NFL. Of the 30 quarterbacks who have at least 10 third-down completions, Gabbert's percentage ranks 27th ahead of Cincinnati's Andy Dalton (45.8), Jacksonville's Blake Bortles (44.4) and Minnesota's Sam Bradford (42.9). [...] Gabbert has improved in this department. In 2015, just 37.5 percent (18 of 48) of his third-down completions resulted in first downs. [...] Gabbert's third-down numbers aren't pretty: Of the 30 quarterbacks with at least 10 third-down completions, he ranks 28th in completion percentage (53.1), 29th in passer rating (56.3) and 30th in yards per attempt (2.7). The anti-Gabbert? In 2016, it's been San Diego's Philip Rivers, who has had 86.7 percent of his third-down completions net first downs. Percentage of...

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his
