Chip Kelly Putting His Faith in Blaine Gabbert

It wasn't that long ago that Blaine Gabbert's career appeared dead. When the 49ers traded with Jacksonville for the former first-round pick from Missouri in the spring of 2014, nobody believed he would someday be San Francisco's starter. He'd crashed and burned with the Jaguars, going from future star to bust because of a string of injuries, lack of protection and horrible turnover problems. He left the Jags with a 5-22 career record as a starter and more interceptions than touchdown passes (24 vs. 22) in 28 games. In his final season in Florida, he started just three games, threw seven interceptions – three returned for TDs – and completed only 49 percent of his passes before losing his job for good. Now, two years later, head coach Chip Kelly is putting his faith in Gabbert, who beat out Colin Kaepernick for the starting job with the 49ers.But, there are indications that the Blaine Gabbert of 2016 is far different from the Blaine Gabbert of 2013 and 2014.After surprising many with a decent performance in 2015 as Kaepernick's replacement over the second half of the season, Gabbert appears to be at home in Kelly's fast-paced spread offense. In brief exhibition outings,...

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

By Al Sacco
Apr 16

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.
