Anthony Davis has been officially reinstated to the NFL and will report to training camp for the San Francisco 49ers today, per Ian Rapoport of
NFL Media. He officially filed his paperwork for reinstatement into the NFL on Monday, July 25 following his surprise retirement last offseason. Davis will be ready to practice with the team when they gather on the field Sunday at 10:25 AM.
Not long before news of his official reinstatement broke, Adam Schefter of
ESPN had
already reported that Davis would report to the team today.
The 49ers will need to make a roster move to make room for Davis. They are currently at the 90-player limit. Medical examinations are occurring today so it is conceivable that at least one player won't be ready for training camp and may be placed on an injury list.
The 49ers who have reportedly "patched things up" with Davis intend to welcome him and have him compete for the job at right tackle, which was the offensive line's weakest position heading into camp. While Davis could have filed for reinstatement at any point this offseason, he chose to wait until the week prior to 49ers training camp, which puts him behind others in learning the new coaching staff's offense.
Davis' injuries limited him to only seven games in 2014. He was the 11th overall selection by the 49ers in 2010 NFL Draft out of Rutgers and had played his entire career with San Francisco, started every game prior to 2014.
Davis had retired due to health concerns, including the lingering effects of a concussion he suffered in 2014. Since his retirement, Davis has been promising to return to the NFL once he was healthy, but has also shown great frustration with the 49ers organization.
On April 1, he took a jab at the 49ers' general manager on Twitter saying, "Dealing with Trent [Baalke] is giving me a headache." That tweet has since been deleted.
On April 27, a frustrated Davis tweeted, "The 49ers should Draft an Offensive Tackle in the top 10." That tweet was later deleted as well. The 49ers took offensive guard
Joshua Garnett in the first round and then selected two tackles,
John Theus and
Fahn Cooper, in the fifth round.
"I do not want to work with a front office or anyone else who seemingly doesn't want to win as bad as I do," Davis later said via Twitter. "Would you happily rent your body out to people that bulls**t you and constantly try to manipulate you? I hope you'd stand up for yourself."

While San Francisco approached Armstead about taking a pay cut from his scheduled $17.41 million base salary, a deal could not be reached, leading to the release of the team's longest-tenured current player.
The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that Armstead is drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Tennessee Titans, so the defensive tackle might find a new home

49ers to host Marshawn Kneeland and Jamal Hill on pre-draft visits
The San Francisco 49ers' evaluation of draft prospects is underway. As part of their assessment, the team will welcome two players for visits: former Western Michigan edge rusher Marshawn Kneeland and former Oregon safety Jamal Hill.
San Francisco recently agreed to terms on two-year deals with defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, bolstering its pass rush. However, after losing Clelin Ferrell in free agency and facing the likelihood of Chase Young playing elsewhere in 2024, the team appears keen on adding more explosiveness along the edges through the draft.
Kneeland registered 57 tackles, including 7.5 for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 10 game appearances with Western Michigan as a senior in 2023, per
