Report: Kaepernick says no to pay cut; trade to Denver seems unlikely

If the Denver Broncos really want Colin Kaepernick, they're going to have to pay him at his existing rate. Or sucker the San Francisco 49ers into sharing his salary. Via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Kaepernick has said no to taking a pay cut, which would facilitate a trade between the Niners and Broncos, so talks between the two teams have shifted to how much, if anything, San Francisco would pay to send Kaepernick to the Rockies. Since the 49ers were unable to do anything with Kaepernick last week, the quarterback's base salary of $11.9 million for 2016 has now become guaranateed, and we don't fault Kaepernick one bit for wanting every dollar of that money. And now that he's at the 49ers' Santa Clara practice facility for the start of offseason workouts, he stands to make even more, in the form of a $400,000 workout bonus. San Francisco was plenty proud of itself when it got Kaepernick to agree to his contract a couple of years ago, the one that rewarded him for bringing the team to the Super Bowl and NFC title game in back-to-back seasons and (like many mega-contracts) looked like it was worth a lot but in reality was worth a fraction of that.
