Niners Take Care of Williams to Start Free-Agent Season

While many teams across the NFL were making bold moves in free agency Tuesday, the 49ers were relatively quiet.Before venturing out into the free-agent pool, the 49ers chose to take care of some in-home business.But, it was important business, even if it wasn't as exciting as the Raiders' landing offensive lineman Kelechi Osemele or defensive end Mario Williams going to the Dolphins.Nose tackle Ian Williams, who was coming off a solid season on a less-than-solid defense, agreed to a new five-year deal with the 49ers, according to ESPN.com NFL reporter Adam Schefter. Williams will be a huge factor for the 49ers defense in 2016. He's still just 26, yet has been with San Francisco five seasons, since signing as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2011. He's battled numerous injuries in his short career, but finally was able to play 16 games in 2015 and showed he can be a force in the center of the defensive line, coming up with a career-high 65 tackles. Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group caught up with Brock Purdy over the weekend as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback hosted his inaugural youth football camp at Levi's Stadium. Today, Purdy and most of his teammates will report to the team for the start of the offseason program, which will be limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation over the next couple of weeks. Trent Williams will be 36 at the start of the 2024 NFL season. While retirement isn't on his mind just yet, the San Francisco 49ers must consider a succession plan for left tackle. NFL Media's Bucky Brooks unveiled his final mock draft, projecting the San Francisco 49ers to select former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan with the No. 31 overall pick as their eventual replacement for Williams. 49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech. Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
