49ers, Tom Coughlin to meet

Jan 11, 2016 at 9:04 PM--

Eight days after firing their rookie head coach after 16 games, the 49ers appear interested in hiring an experienced head coach. Coughlin has 20 years of NFL head-coaching experience with the Jaguars and Giants, ranking third last year behind New England's Bill Belichick (21 years) and St. Louis' Jeff Fisher (21). The 49ers also have interviewed former Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, Bills running backs coach Anthony Lynn, Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and Browns offensive coordinator John DiFilippo. Coughlin is one of 12 head coaches to win two Super Bowls, but he was pushed out in New York because the Giants have failed to make the playoffs since their last Super Bowl in the 2011 season and have a 19-29 record since 2013. Coughlin was the Giants' wide receivers coach from 1988 through '90 under Bill Parcells, a Hall of Fame coach who is a mentor to 49ers general manager Trent Baalke. [...] the 49ers offered their head-coaching job to Parcells, then 69, in 2011, but he declined and they hired Jim Harbaugh, according to Parcells' autobiography released in 2014.
