Joe Staley, Pro Bowl lineman, stays hopeful in 49ers' bad year Staley wasn't particularly interested in discussing the fifth straight Pro Bowl berth he earned Tuesday, even though his latest honor put him in select company. Only 10 other 49ers have earned five straight Pro Bowl selections, and the decorated group doesn't include Hall-of-Famers such as Joe Montana, Bob St. Clair and Joe Perry. Staley joined Guy McIntyre as the only offensive lineman in franchise history to be named to the All-Star game in five straight seasons. Staley's refusal to bask in the accomplishment might sound familiar. Plenty of athletes, after all, say they care more about team success than individual accolades. After the 49ers fell to 4-9 thanks to an embarrassing loss to the lowly Browns, he looked inconsolable in the locker room and spoke passionately about what he viewed as an unprofessional approach. After the loss of several locker-room leaders in the offseason, Staley, 31, the longest-tenured member of the team, has emerged as perhaps the team's most respected voice. One former San Francisco 49ers player is making his opinion of Super Bowl 58 very clear. He believes his former team was dealt a bad hand in the matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in Las Vegas two months ago. Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner, appearing this week on the "Up & Adam" show with Kay Adams, was vocal regarding the matchup and how certain circumstances seemed to favor the Chiefs.
