Before we start, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves with Blaine Gabbert. Sure, Gabbert played reasonably well in the San Francisco 49ers' win over the Atlanta Falcons. No, he didn't "win" the game — football is a team sport. "Quarterback wins" is not a real stat; teams win and lose games, not quarterbacks. Gabbert was solid. He was part of a winning effort. But he didn't show any signs he's the long-term answer in San Francisco. Which leads to the next question: What is the long-term answer in San Francisco? There was a report from CBS that said it is a "virtual certainty" Kaepernick won't be back with the 49ers. The story cited the frayed relationship between the front office and the player. But here's the problem: Do the 49ers have a better option than the 28-year-old Kaepernick? He's still the same guy who looked like a rising star as recently as the end of the 2013 season, when he threw that pass that Richard Sherman tipped and Malcolm Smith intercepted, sending the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl. The problem is, not much has gone right since. The money issue is the toughest obstacle to overcome, even if the 49ers did think it was best to bring Kaepernick back...

The San Francisco 49ers appear to have found their quarterback. It was a bumpy road on the journey to locate him, too. There was the up-and-down tenure of Jimmy Garoppolo, whose relationship with Head Coach Kyle Shanahan seemed dysfunctional, at times. Then there was the short-lived Trey Lance experiment.
Garoppolo and Lance are no longer being with the team, and one major reason is the emergence of Brock Purdy as the team's QB. Purdy finished his second season with a trip to the Super Bowl, after having a Pro Bowl season in which he finished with 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns. According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate.
"According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price."

49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.

Draft Watch: Western Kentucky WR Malachi Corley visiting 49ers on Wednesday

The San Francisco 49ers are hosting several draft prospects this week as the deadline for pre-draft visits draws near. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the team will host former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley on Wednesday.
Corley is expected to be a Day 2 pick. San Francisco owns two selections on Day 2—the No. 63 overall pick in the second round and the No. 94 overall pick in the third round. Currently, the receiver is visiting with the Seattle Seahawks.
