Niners Hope Pears Can Replace Davis at Right Tackle
Erik Pears certainly looks the part of a dominant NFL offensive lineman.At 6-foot-8 and 316 pounds, Pears is a rugged 33-year-old blocker who's played for the Broncos, Raiders and Bills since entering the league in 2006.After five seasons in Buffalo – the past four as a starter at right tackle (2011-2013) and right guard (2014) – Pears was signed by the 49ers this offseason for depth and flexibility. But with the unexpected retirement of right tackle Anthony Davis, Pears suddenly is penciled in as the starter at Davis' old spot on an offensive line in transformation.Joe Staley is still at left tackle, but former right guard Alex Boone now has been switched to left guard. Center will be manned either by Daniel Kilgore (currently out with an injury) or Joe Looney, with right guard up for grabs, with the leading contenders being Marcus Martin and Brandon Thomas. NFL Media's Adam Rank has thrown his hat into the mock draft ring. However, there's a slight twist. Rather than projecting what NFL teams will do in Round 1, he's sharing what he believes they should do in Round 1. For the San Francisco 49ers at No. 31 overall, Rank suggests general manager John Lynch should focus on upgrading the offensive line. Specifically, he recommends finding a replacement for Colton McKivitz at right tackle.

The San Francisco 49ers are likely hoping that a top offensive lineman drops to them at No. 31 in the first round of this month's draft. Fans would like to see the team add someone to compete with Colton McKivitz for the right tackle spot and potentially take over for Trent Williams when the future Hall of Famer decides to retire.

It's evident that the San Francisco 49ers engaged in long-term financial planning. Much discussion has centered around the feasibility of the team committing significant financial resources to two wide receivers, Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. Some skeptics question the wisdom of such heavy investment in a single position, especially considering that the 49ers handed Samuel a substantial three-year extension merely two years ago.
Adding complexity to this debate is the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy, positioning him to become the highest-paid player on the team. He will likely even become one of the NFL's highest-paid players. Where he ranks in average salary will depend upon whether he can replicate the stellar performance of his Pro Bowl 2023
