Update: RB Ryan Mathews no longer an option for 49ers

Mar 12, 2015 at 1:20 PM--

Update at the end of the article.

The signing of free agent running back DeMarco Murray by the Philadelphia Eagles has left the immediate future of Ryan Mathews in question.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport seems to think that the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders may be an option for the displaced running back.

Mathews was drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the 12th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft. He has had 4,061 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns during his career with San Diego. He added 1,110 receiving yards and a touchdown as well.

Mathews grew up in California and the option to staying in-state may be appealing to him.

Yesterday, the 49ers hosted a visit with running back Reggie Bush. He is now headed to a visit with the New Orleans Saints.

Right now, the team has running backs Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter at the top of their depth chart. Free agent Frank Gore signed a deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Update:

ESPN's Adam Schefter just reported that despite the Murray signing, Mathews will sign with the Eagles. He will not be an option for other teams.
