49ers agree to let Jim Harbaugh out of his contract

Dec 28, 2014 at 3:52 AM--

Multiple sources are now reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to let head coach Jim Harbaugh out of his contract. There will be a press conference on Tuesday in Ann Arbor to announce him as the new head coach of the University of Michigan.

Harbaugh is expected to be on the sideline for his final game with the 49ers today against the Arizona Cardinals at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

Harbaugh, considered by many as one of the best coaches in the NFL and a fan favorite, led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in each of his first three seasons as head coach, something that had never been done before. He also took the 49ers to the Super Bowl in his second season.

It is likely that the 49ers will part ways with certain staff members as well as the team searches for a replacement, if they don't already have one in mind.

Harbaugh has a 48–22–1 (.683) head coaching record and was 43–19–1 (.690) in the regular season.

He played college football at the University of Michigan before being drafted to the NFL in 1987.

Update:

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers will sit down with Harbaugh tonight or tomorrow morning. Interviews for his replacement will begin this week with Vic Fangio and Jim Tomsula being the internal candidates.

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal.
