Secondary May Be Key to 49ers’ Rebound
There is plenty of blame to go around for the problems of the 49ers the past two weeks.In losing consecutive games to the Bears and the Cardinals, the 49ers have committed too many penalties and made too few plays -- on offense or defense -- in the second half. So far, the 1-2 49ers have been a Jekyll and Hyde group, playing very well in the first half of games and then giving way to their evil twin over the final two quarters. Bill Barnwell of ESPN's Grantland took an in-depth look at the Niners' woes and pointed out that the offense's third-down conversion rate has plummeted from almost 70 percent to 45 percent in the second half, while the rushing attack also has been less successful, going from 4.9 yards per rush to 3.5 yards in the third and fourth quarters. Head coach Jim Harbaugh, speaking after the loss in Arizona Sunday, said he didn't yet have an answer for the team's plummeting play, saying: "We've just got to play better." And quarterback Colin Kaepernick was equally obvious, adding that, "We have to score more."Wide receiver Anquan Boldin threw some of the blame for the second-half woes on the officials and the fact they've called some crucial penalties on the 49ers...

The San Francisco 49ers don't always do things like other NFL teams do. But they are consistent, for the most part. Seemingly every offseason, especially in recent years, a star player has wanted a new contract. From TE George Kittle and LB Fred Warner to WR Deebo Samuel and Edge Nick Bosa, the 49ers have given new contracts, but they have waited until late July-early August (and in Bosa's case—September) to do so, much to the chagrin of those players, who wanted their new deal sooner rather than later.

Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda recently reported that the San Francisco 49ers have a third-round grade on Louisville running back Isaac Guerendo and may consider selecting him as day two of the 2024 NFL Draft closes out.

No one is perfect. Each of us makes mistakes. I do for sure. Peruse your way through the many articles I've written for 49ers Webzone and you'll see plenty of mistakes. Whether it's a typo or some prediction I offered that didn't go as I had thought.
The San Francisco 49ers are no different. John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have made their share of mistakes. Fortunately for all of us, they hit on more than they miss. But I wonder if we were able to catch them in a moment of complete transparency if they might admit to wanting to hit the Ctrl+Z and "undo" some moves.
