49ers make cuts to trim roster to 53 players

Aug 30, 2014 at 9:11 AM--

According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the first player released today by the San Francisco 49ers was running back Glenn Winston. They are hoping he will clear waivers so they can place him on the practice squad.

Winston was signed on August 4 as an undrafted free agent and has been impressive during preseason.

One surprise cut was offensive lineman Adam Snyder. The team already lacked depth on the offensive line and Snyder is an experienced veteran.

For the second straight year, special teams standout WR Kassim Osgood didn't make the final cut.

Per multiple sources, the team has waived or released the following players:

RB Glenn Winston
OT Carter Bykowski
LB Shayne Skov
NT Mike Purcell
TE Asante Cleveland
LS Kevin McDermott
S C.J. Spillman
WR Kassim Osgood
OT Michael Philipp
G Al Netter
OT Ryan Seymour
RB Alfonso Smith
OL Adam Snyder
S Bubba Ventrone
DL Lawrence Okoye
CB Darryl Morris
OLB Chase Thomas
WR Lance Lewis
WR L'Damian Washington

Per Matt Maiocco: The 49ers' decision to cut safety C.J. Spillman saves the team $1.225 million on the salary cap.

Per Matt Barrows: WR Kassim Osgood also was cut at this stage last year, brought back after Week 1. Chance that could happen this year, too.

NFL teams must get down to 53 players by 1 PM PT today.

Linebacker Aldon Smith was placed on the reserve/suspended list for the first nine games after being suspended by the league on Friday.

Cornerback Kenneth Acker and fullback Will Tukuafu were placed on injured reserve.

Starting tomorrow, the 49ers can start building their ten player practice squad.
