49ers could use franchise tag next year

Mar 3, 2014 at 2:15 PM--

The NFL deadline for teams to place the franchise tag on players expired Monday without the San Francisco 49ers applying it.That's no surprise. It would have been a surprise if the 49ers did apply the tag.The team's top free-agent priorities, after re-signing receiver Anquan Boldin on Monday, are safety Donte Whitner, kicker Phil Dawson and cornerback Tarell Brown.
