Six teams in the hunt for Lelie (rumor update)

Jun 15, 2006 at 2:21 PM--

For those of you interested in following the Ashley Lelie rumors on the internet, the following is from Pro Football Talk.

From Pro Football Talk:
As the Ashley Lelie saga continues to drag on in Denver, we're told that a total of six teams have real interest in the former first-round wideout, and that most if not all of the reports and rumors of potential trade mechanics are off of the mark.

One team that isn't interested in Lelie, but has been rumored to be, is the Patriots.

Lelie has been staying away from the Broncos' offseason program, and he was made expendable by the acquisition of Javon Walker. Most reports indicate that the Broncos would like to get a tight end in exchange for Lelie, but we've heard that the team's bigger objective is to add another running back to a roster that currently has Tatum Bell and Ron Dayne at the top of the depth chart.

On June 9th, head coach Mike Nolan and vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan denied the rumors of San Francisco's interest in trading tight end Eric Johnson.

"I'm going to let itself play out," Nolan said of the tight end competition. "I'm excited to see what Eric can do."

The internet rumor that had the 49ers, Broncos and Saints involved in a three way trade turned out to be false. The rumored trade would have sent Johnson to Denver, Lelie to New Orleans and wide receiver Donte' Stallworth to San Francisco.

San Francisco did show interest in Lelie prior to the draft, but Denver's asking price was much more than the team was willing to give up.

The reliability of Pro Football Talk's rumor mill has been hit and miss in the past.
