Newberry, Johnson status; Pre-draft visits

Dennis Georgatos, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan put the odds at "50-50" that center Jeremy Newberry will be able to return to play this season after undergoing micro-fracture surgery to repair his degraded right knee joint. "We're getting good reports from Jeremy, but we're going to have to wait until training camp to see. It's a very serious surgery that took place."

Johnson participating in offseason workouts

Dennis Georgatos, writing for the Sporting News, reports San Francisco 49ers tight end Eric Johnson, who has missed two of the past three seasons with injuries, is an active participant in the 49ers' offseason workout program for the first time in his career. The 49ers considered cutting him after last season, but he made an impression on head coach Mike Nolan when he sought Nolan out the day after the season and told the coach of his renewed dedication to the team and determination to improve his conditioning.

Carfagno works out for team

Mike Kuhns, of the Pocono Record, reports East Stroudsburg fullback Anthony Carfagno worked out for the San Francisco 49ers April 6.

Team conducts pre-draft visits

Chrissy Mauck, of 49ers.com, reports the San Francisco 49ers conducted pre-draft visits with Stanford linebacker Kevin Schimmelmann, California punter David Lonie, California center Marvin Phillip and UCLA quarterback Drew Olson on Friday, April 21.

Team attends J. Lewis' workout

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers attended George Mason tight end Jai Lewis' workout.

Despite initial reports, two draft prospects who were set to visit the San Francisco 49ers ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft ultimately did not meet with the team. Matt Barrows of The Athletic revealed that former USC wide receiver Brenden Rice and former Oregon safety Jamal Hill didn't end up visiting the Bay Area organization. Barrows wrote, "Meanwhile, a report in March indicated that USC receiver Brenden Rice, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, would visit the 49ers, but he didn't end up coming, according to two league sources."
