The following is from a Sacramento Bee article by Jason Jones.

Quarterbacks Alex Smith (shoulder) and Shaun Hill (finger) are progressing well following injuries that ended their 2007 seasons, said 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan.

They will compete for the starting job under new offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Smith has been at team headquarters in Santa Clara and has begun throwing.

"Nothing should hold them back once we get to our minicamp and (organized team activities)," McCloughan said.

The 49ers didn't designate a franchise or transition player but want to keep defensive lineman Isaac Sopoaga, who becomes a free agent Feb. 29.

"Nothing's been done yet, but we're in conversations with him," McCloughan said. "We'd love to have him back."
