Following the loss to the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan stated that quarterbacks Alex Smith and Shaun Hill will compete next season for the starting job.

Smith was replaced by veteran Trent Dilfer after injuring his shoulder earlier in the season. Hill replaced Dilfer after he suffered a concussion. Hill went 2-0 as a starter. During his three games played, Hill completed 54 of 79 passes for 501 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. He had a quarterback rating of 101.3. Not too bad for a guy who has only taken one snap prior to this season. That snap was a kneel down in 2005 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Of course, this is all assuming that Nolan returns for a fourth season with the team.

Nolan said that Larry Allen has played really well over the last month and that he can still play. Whether or not he returns for a 15th season will be up to Allen.
