49ers sold $100,000 worth of alternate jerseys on first full day of availability

May 26, 2018 at 8:18 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers had a successful launch of their new alternate/throwback Color Rush jerseys. The team sold $100,000 on the first full day of availability to fans, according to a report by Darren Rovell of ESPN.

That's a pretty impressive sum considering it's the offseason. As expected, the jersey of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was the top seller on Thursday, accounting for 63 percent of sales. The team also offers the jerseys of current players Richard Sherman and Pierre Garçon along with past players Steve Young, Jerry Rice, and Deion Sanders from the official online store. Prices on the new jerseys range from $74.99 to $149.99 depending on the size and quantity one chooses.

The new design was unveiled at the 49ers' State of the Franchise event at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose on Wednesday night with jerseys becoming available to fans at 9:10 p.m. PT that evening.

"Inspired by fan feedback, the 49ers will wear their much-heralded throwback uniforms from the 1994 Super Bowl season for one home game, yet to be determined, during the 2018 season," read a statement issued by the team Wednesday night.

The new alternate jerseys replace the all-black with red player names and numbers that debuted in 2015 and have been worn five times during games since then. Although, we may not have seen the last of the darker variant.

"[The all-black] uniforms will remain available for the team to wear in the future," a team spokesman said.

49ers CEO Jed York stated on Thursday that fans can thank head coach Kyle Shanahan for helping to bring back one of the most iconic and popular jersey designs in franchise history.

The 1994 throwbacks were based on the design of the 49ers' jerseys worn for just one season in 1955 (and the ensuing preseason). NFL teams wore throwbacks for part of 1994 to commemorate the league's 75th anniversary. The 49ers requested permission to continue wearing the jerseys for the remainder of the season, and the design has not been seen since.
