Health will help determine futures for 49ers’ Jimmie Ward, Arik Armstead
Mar 21, 2018 at 4:00 PM
• --
In 2016, 49ers safety Jimmie Ward sustained a broken collarbone and defensive tackle Arik Armstead had a torn labrum. In 2017, Ward had a broken forearm and Armstead was sidelined with a broken hand. In 2018? The players who have ended each of the past two seasons on injured reserve will hope to finish the season firmly in the 49ers' long-term plans. After they were both taken in the first round of the NFL draft, Ward and Armstead are in a similar spot a few seasons into their careers. Their injuries have forced them to miss a total of 32 games (18 by Armstead) the past two seasons and made their futures with the franchise unclear. Ward, the No.

49ers allowing Arik Armstead to leave was a 'tough' decision
By David Bonilla

Arik Armstead was the longest-tenured member of the San Francisco 49ers, joining the team as a first-round draft pick two years before head coach Kyle Shanahan's tenure began. Despite the team's efforts to retain him by negotiating a restructured contract, they ultimately released the veteran defensive lineman when no agreement was reached.
"It was real tough," Shanahan said this week about the situation. "I mean, we've been with Arik since we've been here and I know he was here a couple years before us, so it wasn't something we really wanted to happen. It's one of the tough things when trying to keep a team together, and just where it goes with the salary cap and stuff."
Betting on himself, Armstead wanted to test free agency to see if anyone would be willing
Charvarius Ward willing to help 49ers land Tre'Davious White

The San Francisco 49ers likely aren't finished fortifying their defense and have reportedly expressed interest in bolstering their defensive backfield. If they require assistance making a significant move, one 49ers player is prepared to lend a helping hand.
Last week, the Buffalo Bills released All-Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White, who appears to be an ideal fit for San Francisco's needs opposite Charvarius Ward. Over the weekend, Ward took to social media to reveal that he and White share the same agent and that he is willing to nudge the free-agent defensive back in the right direction.
Ward described White as a "hand in glove

The 49ers have three defensive backs in the last years of their contracts. Charvarius Ward is a veteran in the last year of his deal with the team, and Deommodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas are playing in the last year of their rookie contracts. Kool-Aid McKinstry is one of the best outside corners in the 2024 NFL Draft.
McKinstry has excellent lateral agility, is strong in press-man coverage, and tackles well

According to general manager John Lynch, San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward wasn't the sole player to undergo core muscle surgery this offseason. Lynch disclosed to reporters at the NFL owners meetings on Monday that All-Pro tight end George Kittle also had the procedure.
However, the silver lining is that both players are expected to be fully cleared for training camp, set to commence at the end of July.
George Kittle and Charvarius Ward both had core muscle surgery this offseason and will be back, fully cleared, for
