Like many free-agent pass-rushers, 49ers’ Attaochu comes with flaws

Mar 19, 2018 at 7:00 PM--

Examine the top pass rushers who hit the NFL's free-agent market last week and find their flaw. Go ahead, it's not hard. Start with Washington's Trent Murphy, who had nine sacks in 2016 ... but missed last season with a torn ACL and was handed a four-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. New Orleans' Alex Okafor? He had 4.5 sacks in his first 10 games in 2017 ... then tore an Achilles tendon. Atlanta's Adrian Clayborn? He had 9.5 sacks in 2017 ... but six came in one game against the Cowboys' backup left tackle. You get the idea.

With the initial flurry of free agency in the books, respected draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah unveiled his latest mock draft, projecting teams' potential moves in the 2024 NFL Draft. While many fans questioned ESPN analyst Mel Kiper projecting Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten to the 49ers with the No. 31 overall pick, Jeremiah's choice for the Bay Area team may receive a warmer reception. Mock drafts will never please everyone, especially when they solely focus on the first 32 selections without offering perspective on what might come beyond the first round. Why the skepticism from fans? The 49ers' free agency focus has been on revamping their defensive front. After allowing Arik Armstead, Chase Young, and others to depart for other organizations, the team addressed last season's inconsistent play by adding defensive ends Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, trading for defensive tackle Maliek

By David Bonilla
Mar 21

Nate Davis of USA Today Sports recently published his free-agency grades for each NFL team. It's been over a week since the start of the new league year, when players no longer under contract are allowed to sign with other organizations, hoping to prove to their former teams that letting them walk was a mistake. While the San Francisco 49ers didn't make any attention-grabbing additions like they did last year with the Javon Hargrave signing, they did shake things up along the defensive line. The Niners bid farewell to their longest-tenured player, Arik Armstead, releasing him for salary cap savings
