Camp competition? 49ers sign P Jeff Locke

The 49ers have signed punter Jeff Locke, who will presumably provide offseason competition for incumbent Bradley Pinion. Locke, 28, is a 2013 fifth-round pick of the Vikings whose career has sputtered after spending his first four seasons with Minnesota. After signing with the Colts last year, he was released by Indianapolis in August. He later spent five games with the Lions before he was released in October. Locke has a 43.4-yard gross average, and 39.1-yard net average, on 317 career punts. Meanwhile, Pinion, 23, a 2015 fifth-round pick, is coming off a season in which he ranked seventh in the NFL in punts inside the 20-yard line (31) and 11th in net average (41.3).

Jeff Garcia has been impressed by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy in his two seasons with the team. As the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy was thrust into the spotlight after the 49ers faced quarterback injuries and proved his NFL mettle.
While some doubts lingered after his rookie season, Purdy's resilience shone through. Despite starting only five regular-season games, he guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, where, unfortunately, he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his throwing arm. The San Francisco 49ers will hold a mandatory minicamp from June 4 through 6, officially concluding the team's offseason program. After that, the Niners will break for over a month and return to the Santa Clara facilities for training camp in late July.
Between that time, starting quarterbacks will often organize throwing sessions with their receivers in an effort to build chemistry ahead of the rigors of training camp. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been unable to participate in such sessions over the last two years. The last overall draft pick in 2022, Purdy had yet to make a name for himself during his first offseason. Last year, he was still recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing arm.

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have signed cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year deal. He becomes the third cornerback to join the team this offseason. The Niners previously signed free agents Isaac Yiadom and Chase Lucas to one-year deals.
