San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is scheduled to become a free agent after this season, which has just three remaining games for non-playoff teams. Of course, he is not likely to escape the 49ers' grasp because the team has options. They could use the franchise tag to retain Garoppolo or, ideally, sign him to a long-term contract and keep him in San Francisco for the foreseeable future.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has already said the team is focused on its remaining games are not expected to work out a new contract with Garoppolo until after the season is complete. On Thursday night, general manager John Lynch joined KNBR and was asked about the quarterback's contract status.

"We talk to Don Yee, his representative, on a weekly basis," Lynch said on the "Tolbert & Lund" show. "It's kind of refreshing to talk to him because the way he's dealt with Tom [Brady]. A lot of people have learned he really wants these guys to go focus on their business and so we've agreed that there's going to be a time for that.

"But we keep in regular contact. But no, we haven't started discussions, and I'm sure that will come in due time, and we're looking forward to that time."

Garoppolo has started two games for the 49ers, won both, and increased his record as a starting quarterback to 4-0. In two starts this season, he has completed 65.7-percent of his passes for 627 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Garoppolo also threw another score late during a Week 12 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks after coming in for injured rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Garoppolo needs just 141 yards on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans to register the most passing yards in franchise history by a 49ers quarterback in his first three starts.

Brock Purdy set a San Francisco 49ers single-season record in 2023, throwing for 4,280 passing yards. However, that is out of his control, and Aiyuk's future is in the hands of the front office.
