After 49ers general manager John Lynch repeatedly stressed the importance of character for the past three months, should the second draft pick of his executive career raise questions about the sincerity of his stance? The Alabama inside linebacker is a slam-dunk top-10 talent - the 49ers graded him as the draft's third-best prospect - but his slide was at least partly tied to off-the-field concerns. According to USA Today, some teams had questions about Foster's ability "to adjust to life outside Alabama, where troubled players have immense resources and hand-holding to get through their lives." Both Lynch and Foster acknowledged character red flags contributed to his tumble, although a medical file which includes shoulder surgery before the combine was also a factor. Lynch made it clear it wasn't realistic to fill a team with players with zero character red flags, although his first pick Thursday, Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, seems to fit that description. We are less than one week away from the NFL Draft, and the San Francisco 49ers have their first day-one draft pick since 2021. That was the year they selected QB Trey Lance number three overall. The trade-up to get Lance cost the 49ers their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. And now that they are back in the first round, at pick 31, fans are anxious to see what the team does with the pick.
