In the past two drafts, the 49ers have taken defensive linemen Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner with their top choices.Could they pick another defensive lineman No. 1 in 2017?It certainly appears possible, based on the assessments of several NFL draft analysts in recent days. The 49ers' target may be Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas, whose stock has risen dramatically.The 6-foot-3, 271-pound Thomas just completed his junior season for the Cardinal and set career highs in tackles (61) and sacks (8.5), up from his totals of 37 and 3.5 in his sophomore season. This past season he was selected the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the year, and he topped that off with a terrific bowl game against North Carolina in which he had seven tackles, including two for loss, and a sack.He's now projected to be a top pick in the first round, and Daniel Mano of the Bay Area News Group wrote this week that nine of 17 recent mock drafts have Thomas going to the 49ers with the No. 2 overall choice. The San Francisco 49ers hold the No. 31 overall pick, but speculation abounds that they may seek to move before or during the first round of next week's NFL Draft. With the offensive line as a prime target for improvement and the position going mostly ignored in free agency, a strategic trade-up to acquire an impact player could be in the cards.
Alyssa Barbieri proposes such a scenario in her latest mock draft for USA Today's Touchdown Wire. Barbieri envisions the 49ers trading with the Miami Dolphins to move up 10 spots, selecting former Alabama offensive lineman JC Latham.

Potential 49ers defensive draft target visiting this week

Last week, it was reported that the San Francisco 49ers planned to host former Kentucky cornerback Andru Phillips on a pre-draft visit. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo confirms that the visit will take place during the upcoming week, which marks the final opportunity for such visits to occur.
Phillips will also meet with the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans this week.

The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
