Now hiring: 49ers busy upgrading offense on eve of free agency

A week after general manager John Lynch said his new team would take an aggressive approach to free agency, the 49ers reportedly agreed to terms with a slew of players to upgrade an offense that's scored the third-fewest points in the NFL over the past two seasons. The 49ers clearly made effective use of the so-called "legal tampering" period that began Tuesday to reach agreements with Chicago quarterback Brian Hoyer, Washington wide receiver Pierre Garcon and Buffalo wideout Marquise Goodwin. The 49ers have had interest in dealing for Cousins, but are reportedly reluctant to surrender high-end draft picks, partly because of the host of other roster needs in the aftermath of a 2-14 season. Hoyer was also pursued by the Jets - another team with a black hole at the position - but was no doubt attracted to the 49ers because of the presence of head coach Kyle Shanahan, who served as his offensive coordinator with the Browns in 2014. Hoyer made 13 starts and threw for a career-high 3,326 yards, the most by a Cleveland quarterback since Derek Anderson (3,787) in 2007.
