Where did the 49ers’ own 7th-round pick go?

On Friday, Peter Volmut of the San Francisco 49ers public relations department released a list of the 10 selections the team owns in the 2017 NFL Draft (shown below). This was after compensatory selections were awarded by the league. The 49ers received one such selection – a fourth-round pick.

So what happened to the 49ers' own 7th-round selection? Why aren't there 11 picks instead of widely reported 10? There seems to be some confusion out there on social media.

In 2015, the 49ers traded TE Derek Carrier to the Washington Redskins. In return, the 49ers received a 5th-round draft pick. Pretty straight forward, right? Well, there was more to it. The 49ers also ended up giving Washington their 7th-round pick in the trade, per CSN Bay Area. That's where the vanishing 11th pick went.

Washington received: TE Derek Carrier, 49ers' 7th-round pick (220 overall)
San Francisco received: Redskins' 5th-round pick (161 overall)

Wait a minute. When did a 7th-round selection come into play for Carrier? It was conditional according to CSN Bay Area. If Carrier didn't meet a playing time condition, Washington would receive the 49ers' 2017 7th-round selection. He didn't meet that playing time condition so the result was what is listed above – the 49ers parting with their own 7th-round pick as part of the trade.

Why didn't Carrier meet his playing time condition? After starting 12 games for Washington in 2015, the tight end suffered a torn ACL and MCL in a game against the Chicago Bears.

However, the 49ers did get the pick just before their original 7th-round selection, the 219th overall, from the Cleveland Browns in return for P Andy Lee. As of now, that leaves the 49ers with 10 selections in the upcoming draft and not 11.

Below is a list of the team's picks in the upcoming draft, according to the 49ers public relations department.

Round Pick Overall

7-round mock draft from The Athletic sees 49ers fortifying defense early

By David Bonilla

Analyst Dane Brugler recently revealed his seven-round mock draft for The Athletic, forecasting all 257 selections in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, set to kick off next week. "Piecing together a mock like this is time consuming, but I enjoy the exercise, because it allows me to focus on each team's needs, organizational trends and prospect-team pairings that make sense based on '30' visits, league buzz and overall interest," Brugler wrote. Most expect the 49ers to address the trenches early in the draft, and Brugler has the team doing that. It's just not on the offensive side of the football. In fact, Brugler doesn't have San Francisco

7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary

The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster." The rest of the mock draft reveals at least part of the

Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus unveiled a seven-round mock draft for the San Francisco 49ers, addressing several key needs for the team in the 10-pick projection. Interestingly, the mock draft sees the team adding two legacy players. But before delving into that, let's examine the first three selections. Sikkema has the 49ers shoring up their offensive line at pick No. 31 with the selection of former Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan. Morgan allowed 14 pressures and two sacks in his 477 pass-blocking snaps at left tackle in 2023. He earned an impressive pass-blocking grade of 87.3 and an overall grade of

The 2024 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, and ESPN's Jordan Reid released a behemoth of a mock draft, projecting all 257 selections across all seven rounds. The ESPN analyst has the Washington Commanders leaping in front of the San Francisco 49ers in the first round to select one of the top offensive tackle prospects, leaving John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan's squad to take a different approach.
